ABIC applauds administration’s focus on resolving immigration issues that can help stem labor shortages, rising inflation, and keep families together

WASHINGTON – During his first nationally-televised State of the Union Address before a joint session of Congress, President Biden solemnly laid out the challenges facing our nation following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He also noted the need for robust immigration solutions that would legalize the status of long-time immigrants in the U.S. who can fill job openings, increase productivity, and slow down inflation.

The president said, “If we are to advance liberty and justice, we need to secure the Border and fix the immigration system,” adding that both can be done. “We can do all this while keeping lit the torch of liberty that has led generations of immigrants to this land—my forefathers and so many of yours. Provide a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, those on temporary status, farm workers, and essential workers. Revise our laws so businesses have the workers they need and families don’t wait decades to reunite. It’s not only the right thing to do—it’s the economically smart thing to do. That’s why immigration reform is supported by everyone from labor unions to religious leaders to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Let’s get it done once and for all.”

The following is a statement by Rebecca Shi, executive director of the bipartisan American Business Immigration Coalition (ABIC):

“We agree with President Biden: Let’s get this done once and for all.

“At this critical moment when our global economy and supply chain is under grave threat, providing a path to legal status for immigrant workers is more urgent than ever to curb extreme labor shortage and rising prices. We applaud President Biden for making one of his strongest statements to date regarding the need for immigration solutions that will grow jobs, strengthen our economy, keep families together, and benefit all American families.

“Let’s move forward with the confidence that history is on the side of American values and our economic prosperity. We look forward to President Biden and Congress’ leadership this year on immigration reform for those who come to our nation to find freedom, work hard and build families.”
