Hawley’s Hold on Mayorkas’ Swift Confirmation Puts Our National Security At Risk a Second Time

WASHINGTON, DC — Business and law enforcement leaders are calling on Sen. Josh Hawley (MO-R) to immediately lift his hold on the swift confirmation of President Biden’s nominee Alejandro Mayorkas to lead the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Hawley’s actions first incited the attack on the Capitol on January 6, and now Hawley blocking Biden’s homeland security pick weakens our ability to defend from foreign and domestic threats.

“Senator Hawley encouraged an insurrection and sided with domestic terrorists. Now he has endangered our national security a second time,” said Bob Worsley, SkyMall and NZ legacy founder, Arizona Republican State Senator (retired), and ABIC Co-Chair. “Hawley is blocking our country’s ability to defend itself from foreign and domestic threats.”

At 17% favorability among Missouri citizens, abandoned by donors, and facing a potential federal investigation for inciting the insurrection that cost the lives of five people, including law enforcement officers, Hawley continues to put politics ahead of the nation’s security.

Mayorkas won the strong support of law enforcement, bipartisan former DHS secretaries, former President Trump’s DHS chief, and business leaders. His experienced and tested leadership will be critical to help strengthen our national security, repair and rebuild our economy.

“I worked directly with Alejandro Mayorkas when he was deputy director of Homeland Security,” said Mark Curran, Republican Sheriff of Lake County (retired), who was the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate representing Illinois. “Mayorkas walked a balance of border security and immigration enforcement in a humane and practical manner as could have been done. The Sheriffs Association supports Mayorkas’ swift confirmation because local and national law enforcement officials need guidance and leadership. That person is Alejandro Mayorkas.”

John Rowe, Exelon Chairman Emeritus and American Business Immigration Coalition (ABIC) Co-Chair, added: “With many threats facing our nation, effective responses from our federal government are essential. Presidents Trump and Obama got their DHS secretary picks confirmed on day one. Mayorkas is the leader we need to restore trust, rebuild and modernize DHS.”
