Central FL Youths Including Dreamers, Venezuelan & Haitian TPS holders to be Joined by Business Leaders and Elected Officials Calling for Bipartisan Action on Immigration Solutions

ORLANDO, FL — Immigrant youth from Central Florida who hold temporary status under the DACA and TPS programs will hold a press conference this Wednesday at 10 AM with business leaders and elected officials to call on Florida’s GOP Sens. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott to cosponsor the SECURE Act and support bipartisan immigration solutions like the Durbin-Graham Dream Act of 2021.

Elected officials participating include School Board Members Johanna Lopez (Orange County) and Jon Arguello (Osceola County) as well as State Rep. Travaris McCurdy (D46) and State Senator Victor Torres (D15).
The press conference is part of ABIC’s Week of Action taking place this week on Capitol Hill and across a nation to push for immigration solutions that strengthen America’s economy. It comes as a Texas judge ruled last week to end the DACA program and block new applicants from enrolling, and as more than 400 business and education leaders signed a letter urging leaders Schumer and McConnell to help pass the DREAM Act. This week, several retired Venezuelan baseball stars including Wilson Álvarez, Jesus Marcano Trillo, Giovanni Carrara, Dámaso Blanco, and Rouglas Odor sent a letter to Sens. Rubio and Rick Scott urging them to co-sponsor the SECURE Act, which would provide a path to permanent residency to an estimated 650,000 TPS holders, including more than 320,000 Venezuelans, most of whom live in Florida.
Immigrants in central Florida fill critical labor shortages in key industries, from healthcare and manufacturing to farming and technology, at a time when businesses are struggling to find workers.
The senators’ indifference on immigration reform disregards the contributions that immigrants, like Dreamers and TPS permit holders have made to the state’s economy. With a majority of U.S. voters supporting a path to citizenship, senators are being reminded that indifference and inaction will not be options in 2021.
